A mule is a hybrid of a female horse and a female donkey or the opposite. At times a mule is also known as a John and Molly depending on the sex of the mule. Mules are usually sterile and hence the male mules are castrated to check their hormones.

Pony on the other hand is a small horse but a complete horse breed nevertheless. They have thick manes, shorter legs and short heads. They are grown for riding and their purposes. Despite their small size they are very strong and agile.

It is easy to tell the difference between them from their appearance itself. There might be some other specific ways of distinguishing them from each other which you would be able to know only by asking an expert on these animals or somebody who has been in close contact with them throughout their life like a farmer or a horse breeder.
