This is possibly a "love it or hate it" sort of book.
The main character is Jack Plum, a man deformed since birth and socially isolated. Jack thinks in elegant but twisted English, which makes the first chapter quite grim (hard work) to read. Thankfully, half of the book is written from another character's viewpoint, a 14 year old girl named Holly.
Having determined that half of the story (Holly's side) was easily readable, I stuck out the first chapter and am glad I did because as a reader you do get used to it, and Jack's way of thinking makes a lot of sense, by the end of the story.
Jack breeds pigs under his house; loneliness drives him to share his secret with Holly. The two discover an easy friendship, right when both of their outside lives unexpectedly turn upside down, and they need the refuge of the "Pig Palace".
Some people find the book mawkish, sentimental and predictable; a bizarre fairy tale. I found it the best book I've read in a year; sad and poignant, showing how the worst and best of human nature could come from unexpected people. I must not be cynical at all; I didn't find the ending predictable, either.
