If the paint is dirty and the carpet is ruined yes you can but if it is in the same shape it was when you moved in no you can not be charged, hope you have some pictures to prove how it looked when you moved in,but if the landlord can prove you ruined anything yes you will have to pay for it.....the best to you.....

No, even if the walls are dirty. So long as there is no damage to the walls/ceilings or carpet and you didn't paint them some freaky neon color. Can't be charged for wear and tear.

Thanks ! I did a walk through yesterday and the owner of the home said she will send my deposit check minus the house repaint and new crpet installation. I think Im going to need some legal assistance...
Wait for 30 days( or the legal time frame a landlord in your state has to send you a certified letter stating he she/he is keeping all or some of the deposit). If they do not do this, you will legally be entitled for double the security.don't cash the check she sends you either.she was suppose to send you a certified letter within 30 days of moving in telling you which bank your deposit was being held and at what interest rate and if that didn't happen, this too qualifies you for double
If you caused the damage to the carpet and paint, yes the landlord does have the right to charge you. Sometimes in a lease agreement it states that upon your moving out you are responsible to have the carpets cleaned.
