It depend on your own comfort. For first timers they have tampon for beginners and to be more comfortable with pads buy the ones with wings and thin as possible its all for the comfort of you really.

You should wear a pad if you've never got a period, and pantie liners in between the periods, then maybe around your 2nd or 3rd you can wear tampons if you want
