The first thing to do is rule out medical causes of inappropriate urination before we come to a behavioral diagnosis.  Urinary tract infection and bladder stones can cause inappropriate urination.  If he is urinating more than normal he needs to be screened for kidney disease/infection/stones, diabetes, and hyperthyroidism.
Male cats can also get a syndrome called Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease.  This causes a sterile (non-infectious) cystitis (inflammation of the bladder).  This syndrome is often in response to stress--stress for cats can be as simple--a change in routine or even moving a piece of furniture.  There are environmental modifications, diet change, and even medication to help with this disease.
It is very important to determine the cause of inappropriate urination is male cats.  They are at risk for having a lower urinary tract obstruction (aka "blocked").  A blocked cat is an emergency and needs to be treated immediately--being blocked is life threatening.
Occasionally a new male cat in the neighborhood can cause male cats to start marking.   Pet stores sell pheremone sprays that some cats respond to--they can have calming properties.
