Gram which is abbreviated as gm is the word used to refer to a unit in the metric system used to measure weight and mass. When used in relation to weight a thousand grams constitute a kilogram. In terms of mass a thousand grams make up a litre. Or one cubic centimetre equals one gram.
The word gram is taken from the French "gramme" which is derived from the Latin word "gramma" meaning a small weight.
Gram also refers to certain plants. It is the name given to refer to plants such as chickpea. The seeds of these plants are also referred to as gram and these form a part of the diet of people from the subcontinent. This gram is taken from the Latin word "granum" meaning "seed".
