Phentermine is the name of a weight loss drug that acts as an appetite suppressant. The drug is known to be effective and is prescribed in high risk obesity related cases. It is generally not administered as cosmetic weight loss medication. The drug is notorious for basically two reasons; the first is that it has addictive properties due to the presence of amphetamine.
The second reason is that in certain cases it is known to cause abnormalities in the valves of the heart. In its various forms and combinations that it was introduced it was never disapproved by the FDA but on several occasions was withdrawn from stores voluntarily, on the recommendation of the FDA. Phentermine acts by influencing neurotransmitters in the brain by generating a fight or flight response and thereby suppressing appetite.
