How Do I Trace Methodist Records In Ireland?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Methodist Church in Ireland remained part of the Established Church from 1747 at which date John Wesley went to Ireland - until 1816 when the Methodist movement split from the Church of Ireland.
Between 1747- 1818 the records for Methodist births, marriages and deaths can be found  with the records for the Church of Ireland. After 1816 'Primitive Methodists' remained with the the Established Church whist the Weslyian Methodists separated and allowed their own ministers to perform baptisms and communions.
In 1878 the Primitive Methodists and Weslyians joined together away from the Church of Ireland.

The earliest 'Methodist ' registers 'date from 1815/16 but only refer to Weslyian Methodists until 1878.

From 1835 onwards Pettigrew and Oulton's Dublin Almanac and General Register of Ireland lists Methodist Preachers and their stations, which will help define locations.
Methodist Records are very  difficult to trace due to the split with the Established Church. It is worth contacting the Methodist Church in Ireland and enquiring direct to that.
