    At the end of World War 2, the international community established a number of institutions to promote peace and economic prosperity through cooperative policies. One of the most successful of these was the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, which became the World Trade Organization at the beginning of 1995. Their carters speak of raising living standards though substantial reduction of tariffs and other barriers to trade and the elimination of discriminatory treatment in international commerce. The World Trade Organization currently has 130 member countries, which according for 90 percent of international trade.

    The history of trade negotiations has proved to be one of the major successes in international economic cooperation. Every few years, representatives of major industrialized countries meet together to identify major trade barriers and negotiation their removal. In 1993 nations completed the Uruguay Round. In addition to perusing the traditional goal of reducing tariff and quota barriers, the new round undertook the ambitious goals of lowering trade barriers and subsidies in agriculture and removing quotas on textiles, and it has extended free trade to services and intellectual property.
