Everyone here is right.  It depends on the type of dog and where you are at.  All you can do is go to the pet store or wherever you are looking and go in and ask?  I suggest adopting one from your local shelter or Humaine Society.  They really need a family.  But you need to be ready to have a dog, they can be expensive to raise, and need a lot of attention.  Just like children.  They get sick too.
