What Is The Israel Palestine Conflict All About?

Answer Question

This is a huge subject, but I can give a few facts which may help. After World War Two ended in 1945, the British government, which at that time was officially in charge of Palestine, wanted to carry out an often-discussed plan to give the world's Jews an official homeland. The massacre of millions of Jews during the Nazi era had made this more urgent, and in 1948 Palestine was declared a homeland for Jews. The area was their historic homeland, and Jews had been emigrating to Palestine in growing numbers throughout the earlier 20th century; by 1948 they were over 30% of the population, and conflict with the resident  Arab population grew.

On 14 April 1948, the settlers, led by David Ben-Gurion, declared the State of Israel. War soon broke out between the Jewish and Arab populations, and the central question - of exactly how, or whether, to share the land between the two groups - has never been resolved.
