Mary Higgins Clark wrote a thriller novel entitled A Stranger is Watching in the year 1977. It was published by Simon and Schuster. It was preceded by the novel entitled Where Are The Children? and succeeded by the novel entitled The Cradle Will Fall.

The main characters in the novel are Steve Peterson, his late wife Nina (who was murdered), his son Neil (who is six years old) and Sharon Martin. Sharon is a young journalist and a friend of the Petersons.

Steve and Sharon debate capital punishment at the beginning of the novel. Sharon is against the death penalty. Nina is believed to be murdered by a man named Ronald Thompson (who is later found to be innocent). The real murderer is a psychopath named August Rommel Taggart who later kidnaps Sharon and Neil.
