A new element was introduced to the Theory Test in 2002, which is referred to as the Hazard Perception Test (HPT).
Your HTP will be included in your Theory Test, and is also performed on a computer touch screen.
The HPT is thought to be important in testing the reaction times of new drivers, to ensure that they are able to spot potential hazards in time. By testing your ability to read the road ahead it can be determined whether you are ready to face the challenges of road situations as a new driver.

The test will take place shortly after you have completed your multiple choice questions. You will be allowed a break of up to three minutes before you start the HPT.
Firstly you will be shown a tutorial video of the test to familiarise yourself with the test layout. You will be wearing headphones and a commentary about how you will be asked to spot the hazards in the test will play. You will be given a second opportunity to watch the commentary once it has finished.
The test is made up of 14 video clips, and each clip lasts around one minute. Each clip consists of various types of hazards ~ such as road conditions, vehicles and pedestrians. Your response is registered when you click the mouse button to highlight the hazard. The earlier you register your response, the higher your score will be.
You can score up to 5 marks on each of the hazards presented in the test which consists of 15 hazards in total.
The pass mark currently required for car drivers and motorcyclists is 44 out of 75.
Your results will be given to you shortly after the test so you can find out on the same day if you have passed. Remember that you will need to pass both the multiple choice Theory Test part as well as the HPT to pass overall.
