It's a medieval cathedral city (although the size of a "town"), with lots of modern bits tacked around the edges and a lot of riverside facilities, too.
Until the 17th century, Ely was an island, surrounded by shallow tidal seas. Flooding still happens sometimes in the surrounding fenland.
The skyline is dominated by a mangificent Norman cathedral which dates from the 1100s. Before that Ely was an Anglo Saxon stronghold, at heart of the fight against the 1066 Norman invasion. St. Ethelredra - a woman -- is credited with establishing the first permanent settlement (a religious community) on the Ely Island, in 673 A.D.
In spite of its age, but because of its historic geography Ely was isolated and has never grown large. Ely has many charming, historical and striking buildings. High Street shops and cafes nestle inside the ancient cathedral walls and surrounding buildings. Oliver Cromwell grew up there and you can visit his family home (open year round).
