What Does White Matter On A Brain Scan Mean?

Answer Question

5 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

White spots on a brain scan could be caused by several different factors. One possibility could be a hardening of small arteries in the brain as a result of high blood pressure, causing a buildup of fluid. The spots might also be linked to an early onset of a stroke or other neurological condition, such as a migraine or MS. It is difficult for radiologists to diagnose white spots from an MRI scan, as there is only a small chance that they could be malignant and abnormal as opposed to benign. White matter can appear as a natural phenomenon of the brain due to the coating of axon nerve fibers with myelin, which gives it its appearance on a scan. Although in the majority of cases the appearance of these spots is not cause for concern, it is still recommended if in doubt to seek a consultation in regard to future tests to determine if they are symptomatic of a neurological decay, with multiple sclerosis or even a brain tumour as essentially worst case scenarios.
