What Is A Mint Julep, And How Can I Make One?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The mint julep is a drink that was created in the 1800's in the USA, shortly after the introduction of Kentucky straight bourbon.  Considered the fashionable drink for wealthy people, the mint julep enjoyed a venerable reputation in the American South during the plantation era.

There are many, closely guarded inherited recipes amongst the landed families of the Southern American states, but the general formula to create a mint julep is this:  Bruise mint leaves in the bottom of a highball glass, and with a pestle, mix in granulated sugar to taste.  Then, pour a good quality bourbon over all.  This drink can be served with or without ice.
