The Sum Of 2# Is 35 Their Difference Is 9 What Are They?

Answer Question

    Set up two equations using the variables x and y to represent the two unknown numbers:
    X+y= 35x-y= 9
    Re-arrange the first formulate to isolate for one of the variables:
    Y= 35-x
    Sub 35-x into the value for y in the second equation:
    X-(35-x)=9
    Collect like terms
    :x-35+x=92x-35=9
    Add 35 from both sides of the equation:
    2x-35+35=9+352x=44
    Divide both sides of the equation by 2 to isolate x:
    2x/2=44/2x=22
    Take this value for x and sub it into the original equation to get the value for y:
    22+y=35
    Subtract 22 from both sides to isolate y:
    22-22+y= 35-22y= 13
    Therefore, the numbers are 13 and 22 :)
