The 18th Commonwealth Games were organized in Melbourne between 15 to 26 March 2006 where sixteen sports events ran over a span of 12 days. A total of seventy one countries took part with 4,500 athletes. Although many new events have been added, six of the original sports were contested in the Commonwealth Games. These were track and field, boxing, bowls, rowing, swimming and diving, and wrestling.
The most spectacular performance was that of Indian shooter Samaresh Jung who won the inaugural David Dixon Award. This award is named after an honorary secretary and is given to an outstanding athlete. He had won five gold medals, silver, and a bronze. He had set three new records too.
India won many Gold, silver and bronze medals in a variety of sports. Some worth mentioning are one gold in boxing, sixteen in shooting, two golds in table tennis and three golds in women's weightlifting.
