What Happens To Your Singing Voice As You Get Older?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

As you grow older, and slowly get into your teens, there are a number of hormonal changes that your body undergoes. These hormonal upheavals result in large-scale changes occurring in your body.

If you are a boy, one noticeable change is that your lovely singing voice starts to crack. The vocal chords basically start thickening and maturing. Along with this your larynx, which is called the voice box, grows larger. This in turn alters the quality of your voice.

So what causes the alteration of the quality of your voice? What causes your vocal chords to thicken and your larynx to grow bigger? The main cause for this is increased levels of production of the hormone testosterone.

However, there is no fixed age when this change and other related changes occur. It differs from person to person. In some boys the changes start manifesting as soon as they are about 10-11 years old, while some of the other boys take longer.
