An endocrinologist is a doctor who specialises in treating and understanding disorders of the endocrine system. The endocrine system is a group of bodily organs ~ known as glands - which are primarily involved in producing hormones. These include the pancreas, the ovaries, the testes, the thyroid, the parathyroid, the adrenal and pituitary glands, and the hypothalamus. Hormones are chemicals which are used as messengers within the body to regulate many of its internal processes. Imbalance in the amount of hormonal secretion ~ defined as the body producing too much or too little of a given hormone - has been implicated in a wide range of medical problems.
Among the major illnesses or medical conditions which endocrinologists specialise in treating are : diabetes, osteoporosis, hypertension, low blood sugar, infertility, and obesity.
Training as an endocrinologist can take more than 10 years in total. Practitioners in the field usually choose to specialise in either paediatrics, gynaecology, obstetrics, or internal medicine.
