If you want job security then choose Nursing. Whether the economy is "good" or "bad", people will get sick. The unfortunate part is that nursing is a high stress job and "one mistake" can cost you in a legal civil suit or "kill" a patient. The education is demanding and licensing can be tough. The variables are the state you select to practice within and the type of nursing (e.g. Surgical, clinical, geriatric (elder population growing), etc.). You can get "burnt" out from the long hours.

Programming is more of an "art" since it requires imagination and skill to come up with a "unique" solution to a "unique" problem. It requires a lot of time and effort since the computer system and programming language is not going to come up and say, "The problem or error is here and here and this is how to fix it". Error messages are cryptic at best and require keen observation to "see" where the problem "may" lie (think being a doctor pr nurse looking at a patient's symptoms and trying to determine the real cause. Programming is usually "contract" which may mean that you are looking for your "next" job as soon as you get the current one.

There are permanent programming positions (see Monster.com or Jobs.com for examples) though. Database programming is highly demanded but many 2 and 4 year colleges do not teach it (find any Oracle classes). Web programming using Microsoft's ASP.NET (Active Server Pages) classes may be hard to find. Like nursing, it depends on the language you know and what the employer wants.

I also have a daughter who's taking up Nursing. She said she has always wanted to be a nurse and she sees herself working in the US, UK, or Australia as soon as she graduates and passes all licensure exams...

Deciding what the best course is really depends on your interest. Nursing is a great degree for you so long as you have your heart in it.

As to your love for Math, it is always an edge to be good in that subject. Whatever degree you ended up with, your keenness in Math will be a good weapon.

As a parent myself, I believe that parents only want the best for their kids and that they always know best. Good luck!
