What Is The Difference Between Poker Strategy And Poker Tactics?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A poker strategy is a comprehensive and closely planned series of actions that give a poker player a basis for their long-term goals and ambitions.  A poker tactic is a short-term action which serves the purpose of helping to achieve the strategy.

To develop your strategy, decide upon your long term goal. Whether it is to qualify for a global event or to make money; this needs to be clear. Then consider your game; look at recent games and consider whether they reflect your long term goal or were just a means to an end at that moment in time.

The tactical element often takes over and so the long term goal is forgotten and overlooked. A good strategy should make all individual decisions easier; it should inform and drive your game and so always needs to be kept in mind. Tactics may win pots but without a strategy are haphazard and merely a means to an end.
