Well yes and no.  You need to start out with a well trained horse.  You learn to sit on the horse when it is walking, then process to trot and finally a gallop.  You learn to center yourself in the saddle, how to use the reins to steer the horse.  How to make it go and stop.  The use of your hands and legs give the signal to the horse in regards to what you want it to do.  I have been riding since i was 3 and am now in my 50's.  I have owned several horses in my lifetime.  It is a thrill to be able to ride and control a horse that maybe weighs over a 750 to 1200 pounds.  It is also very good exercise for you and the horse.  Have fun if you decide to do this!!!

Agree with Augikins, it's a great pastime and not too hard to learn - doing it really well is a different matter!
