Benbecula (OS Landranger series No.22) means "Mountain of the fords" and recalls the days when it was necessary to cross to its nearby neighbours by tidal sands. Nowadays, causeways link Benbecula to North and South Uist. The main airport serving the southern end of the Western Isles is located here.

North Uist (OS Landranger series No.18) has a population of approximately 300 and is the halfway point in the Western Isles archipelago. The chief town and port of North Uist is Lochmaddy. The island is served by ferry from Skye and Harris and connected by causeway to Benbecula.

Berneray is three miles long and one and a half miles wide, Berneray is bounded north and south by Harris and North Uist respectively. Lovely green island, with deserted sandy beaches. A favourite haunt of HRH Prince Charles, Lord of the Isles, and the rest of the Royal Family who often used to visit during the summer while cruising on the Royal Yacht Britannia. Berneray is connected to North Uist by a road bridge.
