How Do I Get Rid Of My Rats Bumblefoot?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Prevent injury to the feet by avoiding cages with wire floors. If your rat's cage has wire platforms and ramps, consider covering them with towels or wood that you can easily replace when soiled.

Keep the cage clean and dry to prevent bumble foot. Urine and wet bedding can cause irritation to the foot, so change your rat's bedding and wash his cage frequently to help keep him dry.

Provide soft bedding to keep him comfortable. Wood shavings are suspected as a cause of bumblefoot, so consider non wood pet bedding such as litter made from recycled newspaper.

Feed your rat a balanced diet to prevent obesity. When a rat is overweight he puts more pressure on his feet, which can cause bumblefoot. Keep him at a healthy weight by limiting the amount of snacks that you feed him.

Watch for signs of bumblefoot such as irritation to the feet and small red bumps. If caught in its early stages, bumblefoot is easier to treat, and you can prevent painful abscesses from forming. If you notice irritation early, you can make changes to his cage and bedding that will prevent further irritation.
