Why Is My 2001 Dodge Intrepid Not Shifting Gears Past 1st?

The check engine light came on at the same time that my automatic Dodge started to get hot and not shift gears after 1st gear. Could this just be a sensor problem?

If your engine light is on, it is most likely an electronic control problem.
If your speedometer is not working as well, then it definately is an electronic control problem.
Regardless, have the computer in your car scanned to see why your engine light is on.
Sounds like it is most likely a sensor problem.
Due to the fact that you have an automatic transmission, your clutch is not the problem, since you don't have one.

It could either mean your clutch is out or something wrong with your transmission. I'd take it to your local mechanic and get it checked as soon as possible.
