What Does Paramilitary Mean?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The term "paramilitary" refers to armed groups that are not officially part of a national army, but engage in many of the same defensive or offensive activities. Paramilitary groups are most often found in countries that have a history of political instability or have recently undergone a period of social unrest. In Northern Ireland, paramilitary groups are generally seen as illegal, as these were armed organizations which participated in street violence and terrorist attacks during the Troubles. Paramilitary organizations in parts of Central and South America are also widely seen as illegal, since they challenged official military and police forces, in order to bring about political change through violent, revolutionary means.
