New studies have shown that cats can in fact get a feline version of the condition. The research which was carried out focused on a protein which was found to build up in the brain and cause the condition within the cats that were tested.
The protein which has only just been found in cats is helping to provide essential information which helps researchers understand how cats actually age. It has been a well known fact that cats have developed dementia, but this new protein is showing similar signs of Alzheimer's disease in humans. The hope is that now researchers have found this new protein and they have found that Alzheimer's does occur in cats, that they can now try and find treatments to help with it. There are still further tests which need to be done but they are one step closer to understanding this serious condition which has now struck our feline companions.
