Connect the camera to the computer with the cable that came with the camera. Switch on the camera. If the computer doesn't "see" the camera or asks for software you'll need to use the disk that came with the camera, too. A replacement cable can be obtained from ebay or a camera or computer store (just take your camera in). Software is usually available online, somewhere.
If you can take the card out, you just need a card reader that plugs into the USB port on your computer. Ebay or the camera or computer store will have what you need, they're quite inexpensive but take the card or camera with you as there are several types of card in use.
Good software to use is Picasa, free from Google. It deals with the downloading of pictures, basic tidying of images (cropping, straightening, contrast) and cataloguing.
