How Do I Begin Crate Training?

Answer Question

Start by introducing your pet to the crate. Occasionally, in the first few days, drop a few pieces of kibble in the crate. While investigating the crate, the dog will come across these and this will reinforce his positive association to the crate. You can also start by feeding in the crate, or right outside the crate while gradually moving the bowl into the crate over time.

Pet your pet when he enters the crate. Don't force the puppy to get inside. If the puppy is in the crate at night, try and keep the crate in your room, otherwise in a fairly used room in the house, like the living room.

You can start putting the toys in the crate as well, and over time your puppy will realize that it is his safe place, where he will get food/fun so he will feel safe in it. At the start, only put him in the crate for short times, while you are at home, preferably in the same room. Over time you can start leaving the room, letting him get used to your absence.

The crate should be big enough for the puppy to stand, turn around and lie in comfortably. The length should be 1.5 times the length of the animal.

Immediately upon letting the puppy out, take it outside so it can relieve itself. Do not use the crate as punishment, or when it is visibly stressed.

I just put my puppy in it when we brought her home gave her a blanket. Then at bed time put her in it for the night. She loves it! It is her safe place she will go in it if she wants the kids to leave her alone.
