Amedeo Modigliani was a painter and sculptor working during the early part of the 20th Century. As with many artists of his time, his gifts were only posthumously acknowledged, with his name known only within artists' circles during his life.
Modigliani's works are notably influenced by Paul Cezanne, the important Impressionist who later broke away in favour of Cubism. The artist moved to Paris in 1906, then the epicentre of the avant-garde movement. His early works were certainly informed by his surroundings, particularly referencing Toulouse-Lautrec. Soon, however, he found Cezanne and his direction changed towards highly stylised portraiture, both in paint and sculpture.
The artist lived a life of bohemian hedonism and his experimentation with drugs can certainly be seen in the almost inhuman portrayal of people in much of his work. However it also proved to be his downfall as he died young, a result of tuberculosis and an overdose.
