Whether this was actually caused by the energy drinks or not, it is a good idea that he got to the hospital. I do have kidney stones and the pain is unbearable. The same cause for kidney stones could provide a clue for your friend's medical problems.
Energ drinks contain stimulants which usually involve high contents of caffeine. Caffeine is a highly addictive drug and although we use it regularly in every day life, it is also a serious dehydration cause. This means if your friend had an addiction to energy drinks, it is likely that he replaced his fluid intake with energy drinks, this made him dehydrated even more.
Remember kidney failure can occur for a whole range of reasons, but it is certain that entirely dehydrated kidneys would not be functionally at their best capacity and thus damage could be done.
The doctors will advise him how to proceed from here, but I imagine energy drinks will be off the menu from now on, apart from the best energy drink known to man, water H20.
