Some turtles can be identified as male or female by looking at the tails, or claws, or colors of their heads or eyes. The male's tail will be larger and thicker, or his head or eyes will be a greenish color (female's will be brown, both head and eyes). Some male turtles will have orange spots on their front legs. Here is an excellent site about turtles, including pictures, that will be able to further explain how to check turtles for possibly identifying their gender (which, as I read) isn't an easy thing to do!
