    Tehran, located in the northern part of Iran, is the country's largest city and its administrative capital. The city is also an economic and cultural centre and a major industrial and transportation zone. The city lies on the foot of the Elburz Mountains at an altitude of about 1210m on the northwestern outer edges of the Dāsht-e Kavir, a desert in central Iran.
    The city has contrasting climate with short springs and autumns between cold winters and hot, dry summers. In July the average temperature varies between 23 degrees Celsius to 30° C compared to 5° C and 1° C in winter. Annual rainfall is 230mm
    The city of Tehran has an area of about 600 sq km and it is also the capital of the Tehran Province.  According to the 1991 census, Tehrān had a population of 6,475,527,
    Among the most prominent institutions of higher learning are the University of Tehrān, Shahid Beheshti University, Sharif University of Technology, and Iran University of Medical Sciences and Health Services. Tehran's Iran Bastan Museum houses one of the world's best collections of archaeological artefacts, dating to 4000 BC. Eram, Mellat and Laleh are popular public parks. Amjadieh Stadium built which hosted the 1974 Asian Games is the city's biggest stadium.
