This often happens when the processor cannot handle the number of programs installed, or there may be conflicting programmes running on your machine that seek to do the same job, eg, when u have more than one media player installed on ur machine. Often, the computer simply needs an increase in memory size .

You could have a virus.  If you don't have these two programs, which are free, download them and use them weekly.  If you run them you might find the problem.  They are:  Www.spybot.comen/index.html and www.lavasoftusa.co (for Ad-aware).

Freezes can also be caused by outdated drivers.  The easiest way to update these is to use windows device manager.  Right click on the My Computer icon and click Properties.  Choose the Hardware Device tab and click Device Manager.  Double click on the device (do one at a time) and choose the Driver tab and update driver.  If the utility finds a newer driver, install it and see if your system lockups or freezes stop.  If you want to search online for driver updates go to www.drivershq.com or www.winguides.comdrivers or check Microsoft windows.

Also, you might check that your downloaded programs are compatible with your windows programs.  Click on Tools at the top right of your computer and click on Manage Add-ons and take a look at those.  Hope this helps.
