First, determine if your digital camera has a PC cam mode. Most new digital cameras have a web cam setting.

Next, find a suitable place for the camera; directly in front and slightly above where you normally sit is usual. So is to the left or right of your monitor at eye level. Ensure the camera is secure; the best platform is a small tripod but a spare mouse mat may be required to ensure the tripod doesn't do a Bambi on ice impression.

With the camera and computer off, link them together with a USB cable. Power the camera up from the mains and set to PC cam mode.

Boot up your computer, Windows XP and Macs do a pretty fine job of detecting new hardware so click to confirm they've guessed right. With Skype already installed and in use before, there should be no reason to tinker with firewalls unless prompted.

Connect to Skype and go Tools/Options, and then select Video. Check the Enable Skype Video box and the Start my video automatically box. Click Save and then the Test Webcam button. You should now be looking at yourself pulling funny faces and waving.
