The moon rotates around the earth and at night, it reflects the sunlight that reaches it, depending on the position of the moon relative to the earth, the earth may block out some of the sun rays, so the darkness on the moon is actually the earth's shadow - when out of the range of the earth, the moon appears full because the sunlight is able to reach it without obstruction
