Maine is in the USA, not Canada. In fact, there are at least six Maines in the US.

The best known, however, is Maine in the state of Maine. It is located in the area collectively known as New England in America's far north eastern corner. Due to its geography, it is perhaps understandable why people are unsure which side of the border it lies.

Maine is home today to over 1.2 million people. Its early history was not American, though. The name comes from Maienne, meaning river of the middle in old French. Unsurprisingly, Maine is bordered by Quebec, one of the principal French speaking parts of Canada.

Off the coast of Maine lies Machias Seal Island, a rocky islet, that is claimed by both the U.S. and Canada and one of five North American land areas where sovereignty is still in dispute.

The five other Maines are in Coconino County, Arizona; Appanoose County, Iowa; Broome County, New York; Otter Tail County, Minnesota; Davie County, North Carolina.
