Goldfish can get huge and territorial. One might say the fish is protecting itself making sure he/she has enough room to grow in the tank by killing their tank buddy. Even if you have a huge tank to that fish it may not be enough and he/she may continue to attack If one fish is sick or doing porely another will take advantage and consider them food. If you can separate them please do if one is sick you don't want the other fish to get sick as well.

Unfortunately this happens quite often with fish; tail biting, nibbling and sometimes they even bite chunks out of each other and can kill each other. There doesn't seem to be in any reason or logic for this, it may just be boredom, or maybe one fish can sense a weakness in the other one.
