From the Hebrew name (Mikha'el) meaning 'who is like God?' This is not a statement and does not mean Michael who is like God; in fact it is a rhetorical question, implying no person is like God. Saint Michael was one of the seven archangels in Hebrew tradition and the only one identified as an archangel in the Bible. In the Book of Revelation in the New Testament he is portrayed as the leader of heaven's armies, and thus is considered the patron saint of soldiers. __Etymology is the study of the origins of words. The etymology of a word is its linguistic history. For example, the word etymology comes to us from the Ancient Greek language. It is composed of two parts; the Greek word etymon, which means 'the true sense of a word', combined with the Greek element logia, which means 'doctrine, study'. Combining these two parts gives us 'the study of the true sense of words', which can be said to be the 'meaning' of the word etymology. The etymology of names is the study of the origin and literal meaning of names.

The subject of baby's names often proves to be a sticking point for many expectant parents. Many parents consider name meanings to be an important factor when picking a baby name. Parents often seek a name which in its meaning reflects their beliefs or personality. Often, choice of baby name is impacted by popularity; some parents opt for popular baby names, while others prefer to pick a unique or unusual baby name.

The name Michael comes from Hebrew and means "Who is like unto God?"   It's meant as a rhetorical question with the answer being "nobody".  It is the name of the Archangel Michael who drove out Satan and his angels because they refused to bow to God.  Satan refused to believe in the supremacy of God, whereas Michael's name itself declares God's power.

The names of the angels Raphael and Gabriel also have meaning.  Raphael means "God heals" and Gabriel's name means "God is my strength".  The angel Raphael appears in the book of Tobit, which is one of seven books recognized as inspired scripture by Catholics, but rejected by Protestants.  As for why Catholics call the angel Michael "St.Michael", the reason is that it's an honorary title that denotes that he is holy or sanctified.  The word saint comes from the Latin "sanctus" which means "holy".  St. Michael is holy because God made him so.

The angel Michael is a great person to be named after, if you ask me.

I'm sorry but there is no angel mentioned in the Bible by the name "Raphael". In addition, I am a Christian and Michael is still considered an archangel not a saint.

Please people before you put answer out here for others to read...know what you are talking about so that you don't confuse someone else.

Moreover, don't take my word for it, look it up for yourself...you can go to www.biblegateway.com and it has various Bibles you can use to look up references and verses.

Hey whatever you people say, all things are left to freedom of thought. However, heavenly beings are not known by people, not at all, they are known by those that researched in Bibles, old literature and all, quoting if from the bible, it may mean that everything is bound to inference depending on one's spiritual understanding. If Jesus is the Arch angel, who cares and who rebukes, and who says no, who says yes and who disagrees? The question really is what does the name Michael mean? It means the one who is like God........who else is like God? Raphael, Gabriel, Michael, whatever the name issue is? It doesnt matter, please note the issue is........are you saved....by the Lord Jesus

The name Michael means "Who is like God?" It is a question, not a statement. The fact that it is a question changes the whole direction of the meaning

The name Michael in Hebrew means "one who is like God". It's derived from the name of the Archangel Michael who is now considered a saint in Christianity. It was Michael who led the armies of Gods angels against Lucifer and returned victorious. Lucifer was a fallen angel whose rebellion against God motivated by pride, was crushed by Michael. The term archangel itself means "Prince of the hosts".

He is one of the three arch angels Gabriel, Michael and Raphael mentioned in the Bible. He finds mention even in Islam along with Gabriel who was the bringer of revelation.

It was a name given to many kings of the Byzantine and Russian Emperors. It is now one of the commonest names of America and is extremely common in the Countries of Europe, in Australia, New Zealand and the catholic countries of Central and Latin America.

Take your own advice Happy2help. Raphael is mentioned in the book of Tobit which is canon in the Catholic Bible. Uriel is mentioned in the book of Enoch which is considered non canon by most if not all Christian denominations. Also Michael is a Catholic saint. While I am not Catholic I respect and think about others opinons in the hopes of gaining greater enlightenment about God or of correcting the mislead. Some people tend to forget that there are many denominations in Christianity.

Read Rev. 12. Michael's an Archangel God appointed in charge over War in Heaven. Michael and his angels war against Satan and kick him out of heaven at the Great Trib.
(He was never a "saint" on earth. Saints are converted sinners. (That is another discussion altogether.) He is one of the archangels God appointed over 1/3 of the angels. Gabriel was the "messenger" archangel. Satan was in charge over "worship" And Michael; the "warring" arcnangel; in Hebrew meaning "Who is Like God
