Can You Solve Using The Quadratic Formula X^2 - 3x - 3 = 5?

Answer Question

    The quadratic equation ax2+bx+c = 0 has solutions
    x = (-b ±√(b2 - 4ac))/(2a)

    x2 -3x -3 = 5    (your equation)
    x2 -3x -8 = 0    (subtract 5 from both sides to put into standard form)

    In your equation, a=1, b=-3, c=-8
    x = (-(-3) ±√((-3)2 - 4*1*(-8)))/(2*1)
      = (3 ±√(9+32))/2
    x = (3±√41)/2

    x ≈ {4.7, -1.7}
