Milton Keynes is a "new city" situated in the South East of England. Situated midway between Oxford and Cambridge about 45 miles north east of London, it was a city that was purpose built as one of the new generation of "new towns" built by the government of the 1960s.
Although it is not officially a city, Milton Keynes was originally designed to be just like a coty and it still behaves like a city with, for example, buses and signs use the words "city centre".
The city has a 1400 seat theatre/concert hall and also a 65,000 seat open air "National Bowl", a large-scale venue for concerts where many famous acts have performed. This venue was recently brought to more prominence when several high profile concerts were moved away from London due to the new Wembley stadium not being finished in time. There are several other venues for music and sport in the city
The population is around 184,000, short of the target population of 250,000 set out when Milton Keynes was built in the 1960s, but in 2004, the Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott announced plans to double the population of Milton Keynes by 2025. This plan is controversial particularly as the local population will have very little democratic control over the plans and actions of the organisation appointed to oversee the expansion – English Partnerships (an agency for England set up to oversee land acquisition and major development projects.
