AIDS is a complication of HIV.
If you are HIV(+) with diseases due to opportunistic pathogens (i.e. Kaposi's Sarcoma, Toxoplasmosis), you have AIDS. If you are HIV(+) with very low CD4 count, you have AIDS.
If you are healthy, even if you are HIV(+), then you do not have AIDS.

No, they are different. HIV stands for "Human Immuno-suppressant Virus." AIDS is a consequence of HIV. HIV's presence in the body does not in and of itself cause problems other than it renders the host's immune system useless. Any kind of infection - a common cold virus that would cause you or me no more than a runny nose - can be life threatening to someone who is HIV positive. AIDS is a kind of infection which, unlike the common cold, cannot simply be left to run its course until the sufferer "gets over it" and feels better.
The immune system relies on white blood cells to fight infection. When a hostile organism invades the body, the white blood cells are the "soldiers" who join together to battle the foreign intruder. HIV - the human immuno-suppressant virus - does what the name implies: It suppresses the immune system's ability to create and maintain those "soldier" white blood cells. This in turn leaves the body susceptible to infections.
Think of the movie "The Bubble Boy" which told the story of a boy who was born with a defective immune system. He had to be kept isolated from any kind of germ or virus because his immune system was incabable of doing its job of fighting off intruding germs and viruses. He was born with it. It is exactly the same condition that others "acquire" for whatever reason.
I am not a doctor. I am just a fellow who has read a lot about this. No, I am not HIV positive nor do I have AIDS. To my knowledge nobody I know is either HIV positive or has AIDS. This subject just interests me because of its important place in our world.
If I have made any mis-statements here, or if I need to have anything pointed out to me in this regard, please let me know.
In the meantime, I hope that what I have written has shed a little light on the subject for you.
