Telephone is basically an invention that should be credited to a number of individuals. However, generally Alexander Graham Bell is credited with this invention. This is because he was the first one to Patent the telephone.
He was a professor of Vocal Physiology at the University of Boston. He was working on the Leon Scott Phonautograph experimentation. Based on his work on this apparatus, he started his research on musical telegraph in 1874 at Boston University.
Their experiment on June 2, 1875, paved the way for the invention. On July 1, 1875, he and his associate Watson, started their work on building a receiver and membrane device as a transmitter. They tried this phone a few days later. This device was tried from a room in Graham Bell's house in Boston to the cellar underneath the same house and it worked.
