The word pastrami is defined as beef which has a highly spiced flavour and which has been smoked. It is usually prepared from the shoulder cuts of beef. Pastrami is used to refer to beef which has been smoked and which has been seasoned with salt and a variety of spices. It is available in the deli case in some cafeterias and a slice of pastrami is used primarily as a filling for sandwiches.

The word pastrami is pronounced as puh-Strah-mee. In other words, the word pastrami is made up of three syllables, namely the syllable puh, the syllable Strah and the syllable mee. More emphasis is put on the second of the three syllables which make up the word pastrami (that is the middle syllable), which is the syllable Strah. It is made either from a cut of plate or a cut of brisket or a cut of round of beef.
