What Is Sandalwood?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Sandalwood also known as Chandanam is basically a fragrant wood. The actual wood of sandalwood comes from the genus Santalum. These trees are mostly found in southern India and Sri Lanka, Hawaii, and many south Pacific islands. In most of the homes it is used as incense, aromatherapy, perfume, and fine woodworking. In India some of the temples around have been built with sandalwood, due which centuries later the fragrance still survives in the temple.  In Asia it is mostly used for constructing different kinds of artefacts such as Jewellery boxes, fans, and ornate carvings.

These tresses are mostly under the protection of government and are supplied also at a very high rate. The rates in the past five years have risen to $1000-1500 per kg. The best quality of sandalwood comes from the land of Mysore, which lies in Southern India.
