The Omaha are a tribe of Native Americans who speak a language belonging to the Siouan branch of the Hokan Siouan linguistic family. The Omaha, with the Ponca travelled from the Ohio valley to Iowa and parted ways with the Ponca in Nebraska. They were affected by a small pox outbreak which cost them a substantial part of the population.

The Omaha was a tribe which is characteristic of the Plains, they inhabited in typical Plains dwellings, earth lodges during summertime and tipis during wintertime. They were in constant conflict with the Sioux. In the year of 1854, Omaha conceded all of its property to the country and migrated to Dakota. According to an act passed in the year 1882, the Omaha gained the right to hold individual ownership of land.
