    The word Burton derived from Old English signifies "a fortified place or a town." The term was popularized thanks to the legendary British explorer and writer Sir Richard Burton. In the guise of a Pathan, he tried to explore the cities of Mecca and Medina and discovered the Lake Tanganyika. He even tried to find the source of the River Nile in vain. He was also known to translate the Arabian Nights.

    The word "Burton" was first used in English literature in the year 1592.
    Burton is also the name of the famed Welsh star who remarried the legendary actress Elizabeth Taylor. Burton apparently is a famous brand name for golf bags and sportswear. The Burton process invented by the scientist William Burton is  a thermal cracking procedure used to produce diesel. The Burton is also a reputed sports-car from Netherlands.
