Sleep walking is a phenomenon that is seen more often in children rather than in adults; Anna Freud daughter of Sigmund Freud, who studied the phenomenon that sleep walking in childhood is not an abnormal occurrence. In most children the sleep walking episodes stop as the child grows up; however if the sleep walking episodes interfere with the sleeping pattern it could be a sign of a sleep disorder.
There are various reasons that could be causing the sleep walking episodes and the therapy would depend accordingly. For example hyperactive children sometimes walk in their sleep; another factor that is to be kept in mind is the environment as children who live in strict and over regulated homes could sleep walk.
Preventive medications have been known to give positive results though their extended use is not recommended; counseling on the other hand has given wonderful results especially in cases where the reasons are psychological. It is advisable that parents take certain precautions in case their child has a tendency to sleep walk like keeping the child's bedroom on an even level away from stairs or drops. Also the bedroom should be free from objects that could be potentially hazardous and the front door should also be securely locked.

Sleep walking is a serious matter and also dangerous. My suggestion to you is for you to take him to the doctor so they can see what's wrong and maybe they can put an end to it. In the meantime, I think he should sleep with you so you can be aware of his actions. You don't want him to hurt himself. So take him to the doctor and hopefully they will find something to stop his sleep walking.
