Babur had the reputation of being a remarkable ruler and a staunch Muslim who firmly believed in Islamic principles. It was in the year 1529 that the Lodhi Sultans were defeated by Babur's army, who conquered the subcontinent. Once taking charge, Babur laid the foundation of his empire and government on the feudal system, which is referred to as the 'jagirdari nizam'. Later on, Babur sent his generals back to Afghanistan and Central Asia according to their consent and decided to stay back and rule the subcontinent. His policy with the local people of the subcontinent was to employ the treatment of subjects with them, not the object of loot and murder as many kings used to do with the local people of the lands that they had conquered. It was in the year 1530 that Babur fell ill and finally his favorite son Humayun succeeded him to the throne at the age of 22. One of the most excellent rulers who have ruled the subcontinent, Babur was only 48 years of age when he died.
